Call for Action on Bill C-250Monday, July 26 2010
As you may know, Bill C-250 passed the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee last week and is now back to the Senate for third and final reading. The only problem is there is likely less time before the election call than it would normally take to pass it. The only way it's going to pass the Senate and become law (short of a delay in the election call) is if the leaders of the Senate make it a priority.
There may be as little as a week left, so please voice your support as soon as you can.
Please contact the following Senator leaders and/or the Minister of Justice (who has stated he wants the Senate to pass the bill). If you're not sure what to say, here are a few points to make:
- Lesbian, gay and bisexual people are one of the chief targets of hate propaganda in Canada
- The Criminal Code protects certain minority groups, but this protection is not currently extended to gay and lesbian people. - This exclusion sends a message that Parliament believes it’s inappropriate to promote hatred against people on the basis of their race or their religion, but that people persecuted because of their sexual orientation are not sufficiently worthy of protection.
- The bill was passed by a large majority of the House of Commons in September, and should not be allowed to die because of unnecessary delay in the Senate
