Canada's Day of Action for Choice, April 25, 2004

Join the Pro-Choice Action Network and the Planned Parenthood Federation of Canada in the Pro-Choice Canada Coalition!

Pro-choice? Concerned about the erosion of women’s health rights, including reduced access to abortion services in Canada? Alarmed at the attack on women’s rights in the U.S. and the potential ripple impact of the neo-con agenda on Canadians? Then join the ‘Pro-Choice Canada Coalition’ and help raise awareness through a national ‘Day of Action for Choice in Canada’ on April 25, 2004! Let’s remind governments in Canada and all Canadians these hard-fought rights are non-negotiable!

The national office of the Planned Parenthood Federation of Canada (PPFC) and Pro-Choice Action Network (Pro-CAN) are collaborating to build an ad hoc coalition for this one-time day of action and we want your involvement. What can you do? Simply agree to be part of the coalition and to promote and participate, in your community and with your constituents, this national day of activity. Who should be involved? Women’s groups, human rights groups, health educators and professionals, counselors, and concerned citizens. This is truly a cross-cutting issue, so the more pro-choice folks involved, the stronger our voice on choice. PPFC and Pro-CAN will provide you with fact sheets, promotional mini-posters, tips for organizing events in your communities and a national link to other like-minded organizations. This is such a critical issue for all Canadians because these fundamental rights are at risk. Exercise your democratic rights! No voice will mean no choice.

Activities in Canada on April 25th will coincide with events organized by the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and other national pro-choice groups in the U.S.In Washington, D.C., PPFA is coordinating a ‘March for Women’s Lives’ in response to George W. Bush’s attack on women and women’s health issues. Let’s join them for a strong and united continental voice on choice! In addition to raising awareness of choice and access issues, the ‘Pro-Choice Canada Coalition’ will take this opportunity to publicly honour Dr. Henry Morgentaler in our nation’s capital with a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his sacrifices and in celebration of his contributions and achievements in the field of sexual and reproductive health and rights and his unwavering commitment to the health of women in Canada.

What’s next? First, please forward this message to any and all persons and organizations committed to choice, access and women’s health in Canada! Second, contact us and let us know if you’re interested in working together to create a truly national day of action. We’ll put you in touch with others in your community also interested in building this coalition. We’re looking for organizations in each province and each urban centre to take the lead in building awareness and spreading the word about this day of action. Please let us know if you’re interested in spearheading this coalition in your community. Third, speak with your colleagues, your boards, your membership, your friends and neighbors and let them know of this unique opportunity to be part of the voice for choice in Canada! Lastly, if you or your colleagues are planning on traveling to Washington, D.C. to participate in U.S.-based activities, please consider channeling your energies and resources to these issues here in Canada. A strong and united Canadian voice for choice is critical to ensuring a woman’s right to choose in Canada is protected. A ‘tool kit’ of tips, promotion resources and a ‘Day of Action for Choice in Canada’ events listing will soon be available at
