Premier Announces Gift to Honour Governor General's Visit
To mark the occasion of Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean's first official visit to the province, the Government of Manitoba will be offering $5,000 to assist women who have left an abusive relationship and would like to further their education.
The announcement was made today by Premier Gary Doer as Jean and her husband Jean-Daniel Lafond conclude a three-day visit to Manitoba, the first official visit since Jean became Governor General.
"Madame Jean has made women's rights and women at risk a focus for her time at Rideau Hall, so it is fitting that we offer this gift in her name to help women in Manitoba," said the premier. "Manitobans have embraced our new Governor General and we want to show her our appreciation for visiting our province and sharing her concerns and vision for this nation and its people."
The assistance will be offered through Red River College and be administered by the Family Violence Prevention Program of Manitoba Family Services and Housing. Eligibility will be based on a woman's financial position, existing level of education and commitment to live free of violence.
