IWD message from the Honourable Laurel Broten, Ontario Minister Responsible for the Status of WomenThursday, March 7 2013
March 8th is International Women's Day when we celebrate how far we have come in advancing women's equality.
The 2013 International Women's Day theme is "A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women."
Hello, I am Laurel Broten and as Minister Responsible for Women's Issues and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs.
My promise to the women of Ontario is that we will continue to take action to end violence against women, to help keep them safe in their homes, their workplaces and their communities.
I am proud when I see the difference our Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence Action Plans are already making in the lives of women who have experienced abuse.
More women have the supports they need to make a better life for themselves and their children.
In the words of Michelle Bachelet, Executive Director of UN Women, "There is nothing excusable about violence against women and girls anywhere, at any time. Nothing."
Ontario joins the United Nations and other countries around the world in keeping the promise to end violence.
And today I want to thank all the women, and men, who continue to work hard to help women achieve the equality they deserve. Our communities, and our world, will be better for it.
Join the International Women's Day celebrations in your community. I encourage you to look for ways that you can help keep the promise to end violence against women. Ontario is stronger when we all work together.
