Opposition MPs Call for Establishment of a Permament Parliamentary Committee on WomenMonday, July 26 2010
Members of the Feminist Alliance for International Action (FAFIA-AFAI) are very excited about the recent demand by opposition parties for the establishment of a permanent Parliamentary Committee on Women.
As many of you may know, FAFIA and other members of the Coalition for Women's Equality, among others, have been calling for a Standing Committee of the House of Commons on Women's Equality for some time now. In fact, its establishment was identified as a key mechanism to facilitate Canada's improved compliance with CEDAW (the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women) at a FAFIA think tank in June 2003.
For more information on the call for a permanent Parliamentary Committee on Women's Equality, please see FAFIA's brief at http://www.fafia-afai.org/gvt/parliament.htm.
As has already been indicated, now is the time to show your support for this committee. Again, contact info is the following:
- the federal Minister Liza Frulla (who was assigned responsibility for Status of Women in August) can be reached at Frulla.L@parl.gc.ca
- Prime Minister Paul Martin can be reached at Martin.P@parl.gc.ca
