The AWAVE National Coalition: Aboriginal Women Against Violence

Monday, July 26 2010

Inuit and Aboriginal women’s groups are collaborating collectively to address the many facets of deeply entrenched violence within their communities.

Whether violence is inflicted through the misapplication of ‘cultural traditions’ through the judicial system or by ‘medicine men’ and/or First Nations and Inuit leaders, and racialized violence against Aboriginal Women, the National Aboriginal Circle Against Violence (NACAFV) is joining forces with the following organizations: Native Women’s Association of Canada, Pauktuutit Inuit Women’s Association of Canada, Quebec Native Women Inc., Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada. This coalition calls itself AWAVE – Aboriginal Women Against Violence Everywhere.

Their goal will be to develop a four year strategic plan with one million being contributed through the Status of Women Canada’s Family Violence Initiative Fund. Minister of State (Multiculturalism and Status of Women), the Honourable Jean Augustine, P.C., M.P. for Etobicoke-Lakeshore is highly supportive of this initiative to remove barriers to Aboriginal women’s full participation in Canadian society.

"We can no longer be silent on the roots of violence’’ says Susanne Point, Chair of NACAFV. Ellen Gabriel, President of Quebec Native Women says "’We only need to look at Kahnastake to see how our children are being terrorized by the state police forces and organized crime within our nations.’’

The Aboriginal and Inuit leaders have a responsibility to adopt ‘no tolerance’ policies and further, to ensure they promote and maintain the integrity of our Nations values and teachings that honour and respect our women and children. This must be addressed within the judicial systems as well.

The mandate of the AWAVE coalition (Aboriginal Women Against Violence Everywhere) is to develop and implement a national culturally-specific strategic plan to foster violence-free environments for all Aboriginal women (Inuit, Métis and First Nations in Canada.
