Women Plan for the 50th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, February 27-March 10, 2006

Monday, July 26 2010

Coming after a year of major meetings, including the 10-year review of the Beijing Platform for Action, the World Summit on the Millennium Development Goals, the World Summit on the Information Society and the Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) International Forum in Bangkok, the 2006 CSW session will offer time and space to discuss how the outcomes of these major meetings link together in terms of policy and the shaping of the women's agenda for the next five years. It should prove to be an important “map-making” meeting for women working
to put in place gender sensitive policies in key sectors locally, nationally and internationally.

IMPORTANT! You must register with the UN Division for the Advancement of Women (UN/DAW) by December 30, 2005 if you are planning to come to the 50th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) 2006 to be held in New York from February 27 to March 10, 2006,

REGISTRATION: With the registration deadline fast approaching, you need to check that your organization is both eligible for registration and has registered. NGOs accredited to, and in good standing with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) are eligible to attend the CSW Session. UN/DAW sent letters of invitation to eligible NGOs in September 2005. The invitation letters contain your organization's ID and password for registering online. NGOs who do not have ECOSOC status can attend NGO events held parallel to the CSW Session but cannot attend meetings
held at the UN.

Eligible NGOs should submit to DAW the pre-registration form listing their representatives no later than December 30, 2005. Because of the time required to secure a visa, organizations are encouraged to submit the names of alternative representatives in case any of the proposed applicants are unable to obtain an entry visa to the USA. Those who have Internet access may register online and make any registration changes. Please visit the following web sites for further information:
http://www.un.org/womenwatch/daw/

For all other questions regarding registration, contact UN/DAW via email at CSW50@un.org. Make sure to put CSW50 Registration in the subject field.

If you do not have Internet access, registration and substitutions of names of representatives can be submitted to: CSW50 NGO Registration, Division for the Advancement of Women, 2 UN Plaza, Room DC2-1282D, New York, NY 10017, USA. Fax: + (1-917)-367-0587.

CSW 2006 THEMES: The major plenaries and deliberations during the 50th CSW session will focus on two themes: 1) Enhanced participation of women in development: an enabling environment for achieving gender equality and the advancement of women, taking into account, inter alia, the fields of education, health and work. 2) Equal participation of women and men in decision-making processes at all levels.

REGISTRATION TO HOLD PARALLEL EVENTS

The December 30 deadline for registration of representatives also applies to registration for parallel events. UN/DAW and the NGO Committee on the Status of Women (NGO-CSW) are working together to coordinate parallel events for NGOs. UN/DAW is responsible for the allocation of spaces for all events requested by NGOs, UN Missions, UN Agencies and inter-governmental organizations on UN premises to which only individuals holding UN ID passes can attend. To place a request for time and space for an NGO event that you would like to hold in the UN, please go to the following website:

http://www.un.org/womenwatch/daw/conf/seforms/frmLogin.asp?loginType=UNentity.

The NGO-CSW will manage all NGO-requested parallel events that are not co-sponsored by a Country Mission to the UN, UN Agencies and/or inter-governmental organizations. These events will mainly take place at the Church Center at the United Nations (CCUN) situated directly across from the UN Secretariat building. For parallel NGO events that you would like to hold in CCUN, please contact NGO-CSW at the address given below. There is no charge for the use of the rooms. However, NGOs organizing the events are responsible for providing any needed equipment.

Any queries about NGO-organized parallel events should be sent to: Ms. Jackie Shapiro, NGO Committee on the Status of Women, 708 Third Avenue, 5th Floor, Room 101, New York, NY 10017, USA. Tel: + (1-212) 209-3961. Fax: + (1 -212) 209-7161. Email: ngo_csw_ny@hotmail.com.

NOTE: NGOs who are not ECOSOC accredited and who wish to organize events outside of the UN and CCUN should contact the NGO-CSW if they would like to have their event included in a calendar being produced. Please send your information as soon as possibleto ensure that it is included.
