Eleven-year-old Parvana lives in Taliban-controlled Kabul, the capital city of Afghanistan. The Taliban have made it illegal for women to go out to work or girls to go to school.
When her father is arrested for having a foreign education, Parvana cuts her hair and puts on her dead brother's clothes. Masquerading as a boy, Parvana goes to work in the streets of Kabul, so that her family can eat.
Canadian author, Deborah Ellis, is the founding member of the Canadian volunteer solidarity group Women for Women in Afghanistan (http://www.cw4wafghan.ca/). She has been to Afghan refugee camps and heard many stories like Parvana's. All royalties have been donated to projects dedicated to the education of Afghan girls in refugee camps in Pakistan.
